Watson’s deep sense of humanity fuels her unwavering commitment to her work. During the pandemic, when in-person English proficiency tests were suspended, she utilized an online testing provider to enable new international applicants to apply for admission. She researched the test’s validity and collaborated with partners to ensure successful outcomes, always prioritizing access for students around the world. This initiative led to strong student performance and the permanent adoption of the online test.

Her commitment extends to individualized support for students. Watson would meet with applicants denied from competitive programs, guiding them toward alternative pathways for success. She also regularly checks in with reinstated students, offering encouragement and accountability, nurturing their progress toward graduation.

Watson’s devotion to duty is steady and principled. She protects the institution while advocating for students, leading with clarity and calm during uncertain times. Her investment in people ensures her positive impact lasts beyond her direct involvement.

“Johnna possesses a quiet strength that actively sustains an academic community. She advances graduate education through clarity, compassion and steady leadership,” shares William Tolone, associate provost and dean of the Graduate School. “This recognition honors decades of service grounded in integrity and meaningful impact. Her example invites all of us to lead with purpose, support one another with care and use our roles to lift the communities we serve.”

The Staff Employee of the Year Award annually recognizes employees for their hard work and dedication to the University as a whole and service to the citizens of North Carolina. Nominations can be submitted under five categories: Devotion to Duty, Innovation, Community and Public Service and Safety/Heroism.
