Wednesday, September 1, 2021

Students representing a broad cross-section of UNC Charlotte graduate programs were selected to participate in the 2021-22 Graduate School Teaching Fellows program.

10 students were selected from among 43 applicants.  Fellows receive a $3,000 award and participate in a two-semester training program for doctoral students pursuing careers in college-level teaching.

Named as Graduate Teaching Fellows for 2021-22 are:

Hannah Stokes - Mechanical Engineering

Tasha Gill - Public Health Sciences

Hannah Palko - Geography

Amanda Sargent - Organizational Science

Archit Parnami - Computer Science

Sergei Miles - Mathematics

Sean Krysak - Biology-Kinesiology

Katie Jensen - Bioinformatics

Jacob Page - Mathematics

Antardipan Pal - Electrical Engineering

During the first semester of instruction, Fellows receive classroom training in course design, teaching methodology, and classroom best practices. The second semester consists of classroom observations, support, and constructive feedback.  Both semesters are taught by the Center for Graduate Life and Learning's Teaching Faculty Associate, Dr. Judith Krauss.

“Our focus is two-fold,” Dr. Krauss said.  “First, improving their performance as teachers when they teach our UNCC undergraduates and, second, preparing them for teaching positions upon graduation.”

The training takes place over the 2021-2022 academic year.  In the fall, the focus is on course organization, management, and assessment skills.  “We examine theories of learning, motivation, and memory to see how classroom best practices can be created that are unique to each Fellow, their discipline, and their content,” Dr. Krauss explained.  Fellows practice teaching for their cohort, giving and receiving collaborative feedback. In the spring, each Fellow serves as an Instructor of Record and is observed teaching in their classroom to further refine their teaching skills.
