Amanda Sargent, Ph.D., Organizational Science, got ahead of the 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) competition this year with her presentation, "What Is It about Who You Know That Gets You Ahead?"
Sargent’s work focuses on identifying bias that can surface in the hiring process -- not only because of the race or background of the applicant, but even because of the person who referred them.
Also taking honors in the 2021 3MT finals were:
Farida Yasmin, Ph.D., Biology - 2nd Place for “Into the Wild: Wild Soybean as our Savior!”
Shanique Lee, Ph.D., Curriculum and Instruction - 3rd Place for “Loving and Leaving the Classroom: Contextualize the Attrition of Black Women Teachers in Urban Schools.”
Kelsey Sikon, M.S., Civil Engineering - People's Choice Award for “Presence of Microplastics in Wastewater Treatment Plants.”
3MT is a key element in preparing graduate students to communicate for success in their chosen career pursuits. Students who take on 3MT also have an opportunity to participate in personal coaching and instruction on public presentations through the Center for Graduate Life and Learning.
A recording of the 2021 event is available on UNC Charlotte’s YouTube channel. For more information on 3MT at Charlotte, visit the Center for Graduate Life and Learning.
