Johnna Watson, Associate Dean of the Graduate School for Enrollment Management, announces the promotion of Julie Goodliffe to Assistant Dean of the Graduate School for Funding and Research.
Goodliffe began her career as a scientist, earned a Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University, worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Princeton and joined UNC Charlotte as an Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences. After successfully funding her research laboratory and graduating five graduate students, she subsequently earned an MBA from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School and joined the UNC Charlotte Graduate School as an administrator.
Under her purview, the Graduate School funding unit at Charlotte supports the recruitment, enrollment and retention of graduate students. Their team assists graduate students in affording their education and research by providing over $15 million in tuition, fees and stipend support. They also manage employment contracts for 1,800 graduate assistants on campus and run a competitive, internal summer fellowship program to help doctoral students make timely progress on their research.
Goodliffe also serves as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation and uses that experience to help identify, train and support students to apply for competitive fellowships and grants. More recently, in close partnership with the Division of Research and the academic colleges, Goodliffe assumed responsibility for graduate student compensation packages.
From her experience with teaching, research, extramural funding, student compensation and federal aid, Goodliffe understands the challenges that graduate students face in paying for higher education. Her business acumen helps Goodliffe view challenges and opportunities in new ways. She works diligently to create funding mechanisms that are transparent and aligned with the University’s Strategic Plan, Shaping What’s Next.
Congratulations to Julie Goodliffe on this well-deserved recognition of her service and dedication to graduate education.
