Explore Graduate Education for Credit

UCOL 3401 is being offered this spring as an introductory course for talented undergraduate students interested in learning more about graduate education – especially underrepresented students with limited exposure to post-baccalaureate education. The 1-credit hour course examines:

  • What is graduate school all about and how a graduate program can benefit career choices
  • Whether graduate school a viable option and how to choose the “right” graduate
  • Admission requirements and particulars about the application process
  • How to write a winning graduate admissions essay
  • Ways to fund a graduate education

Students will participate in instructional sessions designed to provide an overview of graduate education while exploring academic disciplines of interest in more detail. Students will develop an admissions application and statement of purpose.

The course is best suited for:

  • Rising juniors from an under-represented groups (defined broadly to include first generation students, ethnic minorities and gender minorities within certain fields)
  • Students with a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
