The CGLL organizes community-building events & professional development to enhance student success.

Last week, the Center for Graduate Life and Learning (CGLL) unveiled its new space in Atkins Library, Room 149, across from the Career Center. The CGLL provides graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with personal and professional support to ensure their future success.

Their services and programming focus on helping students refine and strengthen five core competencies proven to enhance chances for success beyond graduation:

Communication: Communicating with clarity and persuasion through scholarly and peer-reviewed publications, grant writing, public speaking, group discussions and interpersonal relationships.

Students utilize the Writing Room. The space includes a smart TV and whiteboard to maximize collaboration and is available for reservation via email.

Leadership: Through sponsored events and student organizations such as the Graduate Life Fellows, the CGLL provides many opportunities to develop the ability to mentor, motivate, inspire and lead. One example is the Accelerate to Industry (A2i) workforce development program that allows graduate students to explore diverse career paths with our industry partners in the Charlotte region and beyond.

Teaching: Understanding how to help others learn in a variety of settings is a priceless life skill. Students learn how to address the challenges of non-traditional and inclusive settings and create dynamic learning in any environment using the latest instructional methods and technologies.

Ethics and Scholarly Inquiry: Becoming an effective researcher requires the right tools, the right processes and rigorous attention to ethics. Through the CGLL, students learn to apply software tools in research and acquire skills that reflect a commitment to diverse ideas, academic collegiality and continuous learning.
